June 6 2026 | Moderate–Challenging Borderland Hike
Rising dramatically near the Kenya–Tanzania border, Ol Donyo Orok — meaning “Black Mountain” in Maasai — stands alone and proud against the plains.
This hike feels different from forest trails. It feels raw. Open. Expansive.
The lower slopes begin through dry bushland and open terrain. The sun is stronger here, and the climb starts almost immediately.
As you gain height, the path narrows and becomes rockier. The mountain reveals wide views of Amboseli plains, Maasai homesteads, and on clear days, the silhouette of Kilimanjaro in the distance.
At around 2,548 m above sea level, the summit offers a dramatic 360° panorama.
Ol Donyo Orok is perfect for hikers transitioning from forest trails to more exposed mountain terrain. It builds strength, stamina, and mental focus.
